Mark Manson before he was famous

Mark has lectured at several universities, including the University of Southern California, the University of Vienna and the University of Utah. He lectures covered all kinds of topics, such as happiness, entrepreneurship and business.

Before his writing started getting serious traction, Mark was just a simple blogger. His blog started in 2009 and has amassed fifteen million yearly readers ever since. He launched a paid subscription model to his blog in 2015, which has become more universal ever since. Mark even tried his hand at playing music professionally, but this never took off.

Mark Manson was born on 9 March 1984, and raised in Austin, Texas. He moved to Boston to study at the Boston University in 2007, where he graduated in 2007 in International Relations and Business. He always had an extra interest in human psychology and took several classes in this direction as well.

His only attempt at having a ‘real job’ followed soon after, as he started working at a local bank. However, he quit very quickly, as the manager complained he was reading too many books at the office… He went on and focused on online business opportunities with his friends.

Mark meets the love of his life

There are persistent rumours about Mark being gay, but his current marriage make that seem very unlikely.

Mark married Fernanda Neute in 2016, after they met in a nightclub in Brazil beforehand. Mark insists he did not use a pick-up line on Fernanda, he supposedly just introduced himself: “Hi, I’m Mark.” Sometimes it really can be that simple!

In his publications Mark seemed to be sure he would never marry someone and would only have short relationships. Until he met Fernanda, that is. They are still very happily married to this day and live together in New York City.

Mark, and Fernanda as well to an extent, is very concerned with his public persona. He isn’t too keen on sharing every little detail about his life with the public eye, and as such, little else is known about their relationship.

Mark’s family is kept out of the spotlight as well, no details on his parents or siblings. There is more to be known about his professional history though.

Mark’s history as a writer

With his blog, Mark started a dating advice service to men. This was in 2008.

He started earning a little income from writing those blogposts and offering advice and coaching. His blog started to gain a lot of traction and was soon one of the most well known blogs out there. As soon as his name was out there, he started travelling the world. He visited over sixty countries to share his insights and experiences with his global audience. He spoke at public conferences, but was available for personal one-on-one advice as well.

Mark saw an opportunity. If he was helping so many people improve their lives with just his blog, imagine how many people he could reach by writing a book.

His first book Attract Women through Honesty was published in 2011 and reissued in 2017.

But his second book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Surprising Strategy to Enjoying a Good Life, is when things got serious real quick. It was published in 2016 and instantly became one of the best-selling books of the moment. New York Times listed it #6 in their Bestseller category, where it rose even further to the #1 spot the year after. People just couldn’t get enough of Mark’s book.

His third book Everything is F*cked: A Book About Hope was published in 2019 by HarperCollins. And although it didn’t reach the heights of his second book, it still was a commercial success as well.

Penguin Random House announced that Mark Manson and Will Smith would work together on coming up with the actor’s autobiography in October 2018.

In December 2020, Love is Not Enough was released in the form of an audiobook.

By now, Mark Manson is an acclaimed author in self-help books and as such, many people are inspired by some of his quotes. Most notable are:

“The desire for a more positive experience is itself a negative experience. And, ironically, the acknowledgment of one’s bad experience is itself a wonderful experience.”

“Maturity is what happens when one learns to give a f*ck about what is truly f*ck-worthy.”

“Do not sit there. Do something. The answers will follow.”

Noted. And if these are the kind of oneliners that get you going, by all means, see if Mark is around you anytime soon, or subscribe to his newsletter on his personal website.
